If you’ve followed us here at Cariani Farms for any length of time, you know that farm life is a beautiful mix of rewarding moments and sudden, heart-stopping challenges. This past week, our handsome boy Grit gave us a reminder of just how quickly things can take a turn.
What started as a routine milestone turned into a midnight dash to the vet clinic. Here’s the story of Grit’s recent medical roller coaster.
The Post-Op Plan vs. Reality
The plan was simple enough: it was time for Grit to be castrated. It’s a standard procedure on any horse farm, and usually, the recovery is straightforward. A little stall rest, some hand-walking, and a watchful eye are normally all it takes to get a young horse back on track.
For the first couple of days, Grit seemed to be handling everything like a champ. He was bright-eyed, moving well, and showing that resilient spirit we love him for. But as any livestock owner will tell you, you can never let your guard down.
When Things Took a Turn
A few days into his recovery, we noticed a shift. Grit was suddenly lethargic, standing with his head down, and clearly uncomfortable. When we checked his temperature and looked closer, our hearts sank.
A secondary infection had set in, and it was moving fast. While we aren’t exactly sure if the castration itself caused the infection or if it was just bad timing and bad luck, equine infections are nothing to mess around with.
Within a matter of hours, Grit’s condition worsened to the point where we knew we couldn’t just manage this from the barn. We hooked up the trailer, loaded him up as gently as possible, and rushed him to the emergency vet clinic.
The Reality of Farm Life: You plan for the best, prepare for the worst, and keep the vet’s number on speed dial.
On the Mend at Last
Thankfully, we caught it in time. The veterinary team acted fast, checking the infection, doing an ultrasound on his vital organs, starting him on a heavy-duty regimen of IV antibiotics, and we kept a round-the-clock eye on his vitals. Seeing him hooked up to fluids is never easy, but we knew he was exactly where he needed to be.
We are incredibly grateful to report that Grit is officially on the mend! Thanks to the amazing medical team and his own gritty determination (he certainly lived up to his name!), he stabilized, beat the worst of the infection, and is now back home with the herd where he belongs.
He’s still got some taking-it-easy to do, but those bright, curious eyes are officially back.
